Euthabag pet body bags – all you need to know

Veterinarians and pet parents now have an appropriate option for the transportation, cremation, and burial of deceased pets that is, most importantly, respectful for the animal. Euthabag is an ecological, customizable pet body bag honoring the human-animal bond.

What are pet body bags?

Euthabag is a vastly superior alternative to the plastic garbage (trash/rubblish) bags currently used to transport, cremate or bury beloved pets after euthanasia.

What are the benefits of burying my pet in an euthanasia bag?

This eco-friendly, customizable body bag respects the human-animal bond and is an appropriate option for families looking for a dignified way to handle their pet after death Bags can be decorated as a family, sending your loved one off with a sweet message. These activities are a compassionate way to help process grief, especially for children.   If Euthabag is used for burial, the zipper enclosure can be left open by one inch to facilitate access for necrophagous insects and the exit of humidity.

Can I bury my pet at home in an euthanasia bag?

If a family chooses to bury their pet, they should be aware that the Euthabag is not biodegradable in the short to medium term as it is made of polymer and is primarily designed for transportation. However, the family can choose to bury their pet in the Euthabag, depending on their preference, beliefs and local regulations. For example, some regions require a leak-proof bag for burial.

Do all veterinarians provide this option?

For many veterinary clinics, the affordable and most easily attainable option is  a black plastic body bag (cadaver) that are very similar to trash/rubbish bags. While many veterinary staff don't enjoy this aspect, it meets the minimum guidelines established for the safe transportation of pet remains.   Euthabag also supports the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Companion Animal Aftercare Policy (visit https://www.euthabag.com/avma-aftercare-guidelines), which emphasizes the importance of sensitive handling of pets after their passing, proper containment of the pet, the importance of choosing the aftercare provider, and the benefits of pre-planning for families. Going above and beyond the AVMA guidelines, Euthabag is  customizable to aid in the grieving process, as well as being respectful to the animal.

Are euthanasia bags environmentally friendly?

Post-consumer recycled materials (PCRM) that unlike industrial-recycled material contain no heavy metals are used,. The proportion of PCRM in Euthabag ranges from 10 to 40%, depending on the size; the higher the percentage of PCRM, the more fragile the fabric becomes. The long-term goal is to find a solution where the proportion of recycled material can be increased while maintaining the product's strength.  Euthabag is made up of 100% polypropylene (PP) non-woven fabric laminated with a polymer to be leak-proof, a resin zipper enclosure, and resin rosin glue. Compared to commonly used plastic bags that use virgin raw oil, Euthabag is more ecological and made from post-consumer recycled material.  Since most Euthabags end up being incinerated, it was crucial that they did not contain PVC or chlorinated compounds, nor produce dioxins or furans while doing so.

Are they expensive?

Euthabag costs vary according to size: XS = $5.40 (less than 3 lbs) , M = $11.50, XL (85-190 lbs) = $19.60 (average cost $8.50 or £7).
