Most vets recommend neutering of pets which are not intended for breeding. The prevention of unwanted pregnancies is the main reason, but there are other health benefits as well. The risks of mammary and womb cancer in female pets, and testicular, prostatic and perianal cancer in male pets are significantly reduced or eliminated. Womb infection in entire bitches (pyometra), which can be life threatening, is prevented by spaying. Castration in male dogs is often recommended by pet behaviourists as an adjunct to controlling behavioural issues, especially aggression.

The best age to neuter a pet is always a topic for debate amongst vets. There are some health benefits of neutering prior to puberty and we are happy to discuss these with you. Whenever spaying is performed it is very important to undertake the procedure when the bitch or queen is not in season if at all possible. Generally only healthy animals should be neutered, unless the procedure is required for medical reasons (e.g. pyometra).

Laparoscopic spay (keyhole surgery)
KGVS are very proud to announce that we are able to offer neutering in bitches using laparoscopic or keyhole techniques. The procedure is suitable for bitches over 8kg body weight. This is not a procedure that we need to use in cats, as the surgical approach to cat spays are already minimally invasive.

The main advantage to this procedure is the fact that very small entry points into the abdominal cavity are required. There is also minimal tissue manipulation needed to remove the ovaries. These result in less discomfort, smaller incisions, and quicker recovery.

Please call and speak to any of our vets about the surgery if you would like to consider this procedure for your pet.

What Our Clients Say

I can't recommend Kriek and Gibson highly enough. All the Vets are so caring and compassionate. They really do listen and will happily spend time explaining various treatment options allowing the owner to make a decision, rather than pushing you into one which you may not feel comfortable with. I have 2 elderly dogs and I'm so glad I found Johnny and his team, as for the first time in many years I've found a Vet who I implicitly trust.
